welcome back to brazilian wood depot’s
youtube channel my name is sam and i
talk about everything regarding
brazilian hardwood decking and siding
today we’re talking about ipe deck tiles
and i’m very excited about this because
this is a product i feel very very
strongly about we’re going to talk about
its uses a little bit about the basic
we’ll talk about sustainability
availability and a little bit about
pricing so ebay deck tiles let’s get
the tightening points here
should be minimum three-quarter inches
so fine so the bottom expands out uh i
don’t want to go into too too great at
like i said folks welcome back to
brazilian with depot’s youtube channel
my name is sam today we’re talking about
ipe deck tiles the deck tile i have in
front of me uh is two feet by two feet
so this is four square feet total it
consists of eight individual boards
fastened together by three on the back
with a bunch of screws uh like i said
i’m very excited about this video
because i feel so strongly about ipe
they are incredibly durable just like
and they’re nearly indestructible
deck tiles can be used on any deck
structure however they’re really
situations they’re designed for low
ventilation areas so if you have an area
around a pool and you want to be
deck tiles work very well also rooftop
rubber membrane roof decks this product
is really designed for that anywhere um
where you can’t get a whole lot of
elevation off of the ground you’re
working on maybe it’s a concrete slab
and you can’t put a two by six under it
for a standard deck frame
this comes in really handy one by sixes
as we know and you may have heard me
talk about it in the cupping video one
by sixes and five quarter by six boards
and five quarter by four boards and one
by four boards are all susceptible to
cupping if they don’t have good adequate
airflow underneath the deck
these deck tiles will not cup
and that’s one reason i like them so
much and you can use them on anywhere it
doesn’t have to be a low ventilated area
but if you are on a standard pressure
treated deck structure system you’re
going to need to be on 12 inches or 24
inch joist spacing 16 inches
joist spacing just doesn’t work
okay let’s talk about the basics of
installation with these deck tiles
there’s two main methods of installing
using the deck tile connectors this
needs to be used on a flat surface so a
flat slab of concrete or a floating
frame that’s flat or just a regular
pressure treated joist system will work
i really like these dectile connectors
you see that has four prongs on here
let’s look at the bottom of the deck
it’s got four one in each hole one in
each corner rather three eighths inch
holes that slip perfectly onto these
ribbed prongs and this is what keeps the
deck tiles together with one another the
deck tile connector also spaces them out
so that the spacing between the deck
tiles are consistent with the spacing
between these little boards deck tile
connectors are also awesome because if
you use your box cutter you can score
the back side of it a couple times
you can break them off on either side
so that they’re not showing
they have a lot of break points
and so you can go into corners i really
really love these deck tile connectors
little holes so that you can screw them
onto your frame or probably in some
cases use a tap con or a blue
blue screw to get into your concrete so
a great method of fastening but does not
accommodate for slope the second method
of fastening is the pedestal systems
several different companies make
pedestal systems and generally speaking
all pedestal systems are compatible with
i don’t know if that’s true totally
across the board but for instance i know
that the common ones like bison pedestal
systems will work with our deck tiles we
pedestal systems from deck wise there
are three different sizes based on the
minimum height and the slope that you’re
trying to accommodate i’m not going to
the pedestals because the deckwise
website is so thorough and has so much
great information about exactly how to
install them and the exact specs on each
pedestals in many projects you’ll
probably be using at least two different
types of pedestals in combination
i suppose there are some situations
where you might use all three
in just a minute i’m going to talk a
what i think the best way to plan for
which height pedestals you need
but again two methods of fastening the
dectile connectors and the pedestals
another thing i forgot to mention about
the connectors is if you wanted to you
slide a deck clip into this corner you
can see that it has a groove here and a
groove all corners have the grooves so
if this was on a corner here
okay that was on a corner here let’s
assume that was still together because i
have more here you can actually fit a
deck clip here or a washer and screw
that down into the center of your joist
it’s not always it’s not really
necessary i can’t imagine any gust of
wind ever picking these things up as you
i just wanted to make that comment that
all four corners are grooved they’re
slotted so that you can use a washer or
okay like i said i wanted to quickly
talk about a really clever way to figure
out exactly what height pedestals you
need so you can make sure you’re getting
size of the three different sizes one
really good way to do it let’s say
you’re on a concrete pad you can chalk a
two foot grid uh have two foot lines in
both directions perpendicular and at
those intersections that’s where you’re
gonna pedestal is gonna sit so you could
set up a 360 laser light to the height
of where you want the elevation to be
for the deck tiles and then you drop a
tape measure onto the line and
it shows you how high the top of the
with your on your tape measure wherever
the laser is hitting that tape measure
and then you can jot that down at that
intersection point same thing for all of
them so you know exactly what quantity
minimum height of this style what
quantity minimum height of that style
okay i think that pretty much does it
the basics about installation remember
on our website we have a very thorough
document about how to use the dectile
connectors it even talks about if you
need to resize this by removing one of
the three boards and either
repositioning or removing entirely
and then of course you would drill your
to accommodate this new size again
that’s all on our website and the
deckwise website has the information on
the pedestals very very thorough one
more thing i i did want to mention is
we’re seeing more and more uh drainage
systems under decks some of them are
suitable for the standard one by six
planks others are not i don’t like using
one by six on top of the membranes that
drooped between the joists uh one
because i know that they’re going to get
clogged up towards the end it’s an it’s
an inevitable inevitability um and i
think that the 1×6 boards will cup if
they’re bottom grooves the likelihood is
less but there’s still that possibility
if you insist or if you’re already
planning or you already have the
materials to use something like that i
think one is called trex rain escape
using deck tiles is far more advisable
than using those again they won’t cup
but two if you use the connector system
and you don’t even like i said before
you don’t need the washer or the deck
clip you can actually just pop these up
to clear out debris in that system so if
you must use a drainage system and it’s
much more cost effective is my
understanding to use the membranes that
do this over and under the joists i
highly recommend considering dectiles i
know it’s not everybody’s aesthetic
preference standard traditional deck
boards are sometimes more desirable in
that way this is a little more modern
look uh don’t forget you can parquet
these which is probably most common or
you can keep them all parallel and
they’re all going the same direction i
think that’s it for installation next we
are going to talk about um
prices availability and sustainability
i’ve got a really good article with a
bunch of good videos on my website about
ebay and sustainability ipe already is
uh very environmentally friendly it’s
100 biodegradable there’s no plastics no
and very little waste because small
knife handles and furniture
but it is interesting to talk about
sustainability and as it relates to deck
dectiles are even perhaps even more
environmentally friendly than let’s say
a 20 foot or a 16 foot ipe one by six or
five quarter by six board they need
longer you know logs to make to produce
those and they can use pretty much the
scraps to make the deck tiles or
otherwise they’re using the smaller
pieces that otherwise wouldn’t be able
to be used for full size decking so deck
tiles are very environmentally friendly
because it’s just another example of
using every part of the tree with little
to no waste so if you’re looking for a
sustainable option ipe already has that
covered but deck tiles perhaps to even
further extent our more sustainable more
environmentally more environmentally
friendly because we’re using all parts
of the tree and we’re actually getting
good use out of these smaller pieces
which otherwise really wouldn’t be
so like i said at the beginning of the
video i wanted everybody to see what
these deck tiles look like with oil on
them because they’re so beautiful with
uh with the oil applied meantime let’s
talk very quickly about pricing and
availability generally the price per
square foot of the deck tiles follows
closely with the price per square foot
of ebay 1×6 now if you add side grooves
for hidden fasteners or bottom grooves
for low ventilation the deck tiles
usually come out to be a little more
cost effective but uh compared to five
quarter ipe boards uh deck tiles are i
think always more cost effective and
substantially so at the time of filming
this we have thousands of deck tiles so
for current pricing please give us a
we do a pretty good job of keeping these
in inventory so we generally always have
okay so there you have it ipe dectile
with oil i of course use the mesmer’s
uv plus natural that you see there quick
it’s really easy to rub on this oil and
look how beautiful this deck tile is
i just used a little cotton piece of a
a lot of people like the deck boss but i
don’t want to get into too many details
i have that whole video about ipe deck
maintenance and how to oil it
that’s it ipe deck tiles call us for
pricing again my name is sam and we’ll
so the bottom expands out i don’t want
to go into too too great at detail
