Ipe Decking Face Screws vs. Hidden Fasteners: Which Is Better?

Hidden fasteners give Ipe decking a clean, uninterrupted appearance. But looks aren’t the only consideration.

After more than 20 years working with Brazilian hardwoods, I still frequently recommend face screws for several reasons:

Stronger mechanical connection and better board control
Easier repairs and individual board replacement
Greater flexibility with square-edge decking
Lower material costs compared with grooved hidden-fastener systems

Below, we’ll compare face screws vs. hidden fasteners for Ipe decking, including installation, appearance, long-term performance, and the option of concealed wood plugs.

Do Face Screws Look Bad on Ipe Decking?

This is the most obvious argument for hidden fasteners—and there’s some truth to it.

If your goal is an entirely uninterrupted deck surface, hidden fasteners have the aesthetic advantage.

But face screws are much less noticeable on Ipe decking than many people expect, particularly when they’re installed intentionally. The screw itself, the way it is countersunk, and the consistency of the installation all make a significant difference.

CLEAN & INTENTIONAL

Brown T-15 Face Screw

Our most common approach is a 2-1/2″ stainless steel screw with a brown T-15 head.
Used with a Smart-Bit, the screw is countersunk neatly just below the surface for
a deliberate, finished appearance.

MORE DISCREET

Smaller T-10 Trim Head

A smaller stainless steel T-10 trim-head screw creates an even less noticeable
fastening point. It is pre-drilled with a small bit, and the surrounding hardwood
helps visually minimize the head once installed.

THE DETAIL THAT MATTERS

Keep the Pattern Consistent

Keep screw heads in a straight line, maintain consistent spacing, and keep them
the same distance from the board edge. Done well, the fasteners become a small,
orderly detail rather than something that distracts from the deck.

Is Face Screwing Ipe Decking More Difficult Than Using Hidden Fasteners?

I don’t think so. Pre-drilling Ipe and driving face screws is a straightforward process, and in practice the difference in installation time is often smaller than people expect.

USE A STANDARD DRILL

Skip the Impact Driver

Problems with broken screws are often related to technique. A standard drill gives you
better control when driving stainless steel face screws into dense Ipe.

PRE-DRILL IPE

Don’t Overheat the Bit

Pre-drilling is part of the process, but continuously drilling dense hardwood builds heat.
Give the bit a chance to cool rather than pushing it from hole to hole until it overheats.

BOARD CONTROL

Straighten It. Then Secure It.

Hardwood boards aren’t always perfectly straight. With face screws, you can work a board
into position and secure it immediately instead of simultaneously fighting the board
while trying to align a hidden clip inside the side groove.

Hidden fasteners can work very well, but they aren’t automatically the easier installation. When a board needs some persuasion, the simplicity of positioning it and fastening directly through the face can actually make the job less cumbersome.

Can Ipe Decking Rot Around Face Screw Holes?

It’s a reasonable concern. With pressure-treated pine and other less rot-resistant decking, deterioration around fastener penetrations can become a problem over time. But Ipe and the other Brazilian hardwoods we work with are extraordinarily resistant to decay, so the comparison doesn’t translate particularly well.

In more than 20 years of working with Ipe and Brazilian hardwood decking, we have never encountered a board that needed to be replaced because it rotted around a properly installed face screw. That’s our real-world experience rather than a claim that moisture can never affect wood, but it gives us a very long track record to draw from.

For that reason, potential rot around the screw head is simply not something that would steer me away from face fastening an Ipe deck.

Are Face Screws Too Basic for Premium Ipe Decking?

There’s an understandable feeling that if you’re investing in a premium material like Ipe, putting screws directly through the surface somehow cheapens the installation.

I look at it almost the opposite way. The extraordinary lifespan of Ipe is one of the reasons I like a simple, mechanically direct fastening system. A deck that may remain in service for decades should be designed not only around how it looks when it is installed, but around how easily it can be maintained years later.

Face fastening isn’t a shortcut or a lesser fastening method. In many applications, its simplicity is one of its strengths.

Rather than detracting from the premium hardwood, they become an orderly detail that lets the natural beauty of the boards speak for itself.

Why Face Screws Provide a Stronger Mechanical Connection

This is one area where the difference is fairly straightforward. A screw driven directly through the face of an Ipe board and into the framing provides greater mechanical control than a clip engaging a groove along the side of the board.

Hidden fastening systems can perform very well, but they are still relying on the clip and the material remaining below the groove to restrain the decking. A face screw creates a direct connection through the board itself.

That matters with dense hardwoods. Ipe is very stable, but it can still move, and species such as Cumaru and Tigerwood can be even more prone to movement. When conditions are demanding, I generally prefer having the strongest and most direct connection available.

Face Screws Make Future Board Replacement and Deck Repairs Easier

Ipe decking changes the timeline you should be designing around. Think 20 or 30 years ahead, not simply about the day the deck is installed.

If an individual board is ever damaged, a face-fastened board can simply be unscrewed and replaced. With many hidden fastening systems, accessing the fastener on an individual board in the middle of the deck can be considerably more difficult.

The same advantage applies when you need access below the decking. You may eventually need to inspect framing, clear an under-deck drainage system, repair a membrane, or address some other isolated problem. Being able to remove individual boards without disturbing the surrounding deck can become extremely valuable over the life of the structure.

Square-Edge Ipe Decking Offers More Flexibility Than Grooved Decking

Hidden fastening usually requires side-grooved Ipe decking, and that introduces another layer of planning. Depending on the deck layout, you may need boards grooved on both sides, boards grooved on only one side for exposed perimeter conditions, and square-edge boards for stairs or other details.

Grooves Have to Be Mapped

Grooved boards often have specific locations in the deck. Depending on the layout, you may need two-sided grooves, one-sided grooves, or no grooves at all.

LESS ROOM FOR ERROR

Cut the Wrong Board?

A board machined for one particular location may not work somewhere else. Cutting the wrong mapped board can create an unnecessary problem during installation.

MORE FLEXIBILITY

Square-Edge Ipe Is Universal

Square-edge boards can be used throughout more of the deck, and leftover material remains useful for future repairs or even unrelated projects.

Square-edge Ipe simply gives you more flexibility. There’s less complication during installation and fewer restrictions on how each individual board can be used.

Face Screws vs. Hidden Fasteners: Which Costs More?

Face screws are generally the more economical fastening method, and the difference is larger than simply comparing the price of screws to the price of clips.

Hidden Clip Fastening

Grooving ~$1.00/SF + Clips $0.99–$1.99/SF

Total: $1.99–$2.99/SF

✓ Surface Fastening

Stainless Steel Surface Screws $0.75–$1.25/SF

Total: $0.75–$1.25/SF − ≈ $1.49/SF avg.

Based on current Brazilian Wood Depot pricing. Grooving is approximately $0.45/LF (~$1.00/SF). Clip and surface-screw costs vary by brand and joist spacing.

That difference can become meaningful across an entire deck. And there’s another financial consideration: at Brazilian Wood Depot, standard square-edge boards in sellable condition can generally be returned, while boards that we custom-groove to order cannot.

So the difference isn’t limited to hardware. Hidden clip fastening adds machining cost, hardware cost, and additional commitment to the material once it has been grooved.

What About Plugging the Face Screws in Ipe Decking?

Wood plugs offer an interesting middle ground. You still get the direct mechanical connection of a face screw, but the screw head is concealed with a matching hardwood plug.

A well-executed plugged installation can look excellent—more like finish carpentry than conventional deck fastening. We particularly like the Starborn Pro Plug system because it makes the process relatively straightforward and produces a very clean result.

There is a tradeoff, however. Once the screws are plugged, particularly when the plugs are glued into place, removing an individual board later is no longer as simple as backing out exposed face screws. You retain the strength and board control of surface fastening, but give up some of its long-term serviceability.

Should You Use Face Screws or Hidden Fasteners for Ipe Decking?

There isn’t one fastening method that’s right for every Ipe deck. If seeing absolutely no fasteners on the surface is non-negotiable, hidden fasteners have a clear aesthetic advantage.

But that cleaner surface comes with tradeoffs. Face screws provide a stronger and more direct mechanical connection, make individual boards easier to remove, eliminate groove mapping, preserve the versatility of square-edge material, and generally cost less.

That’s why I still recommend face fastening so often. The goal isn’t to convince everyone to put visible screws in their Ipe decking. It’s to make sure you understand what you’re gaining—and what you’re giving up—before choosing the fastening system for a deck that could be around for decades.
